The group Odjila was founded in October 1983. From the very beginning they were performing the worldwide recognizable Russian Gypsy music, relying on the tradition of the Theatre Romen from Moscow and music from legendary movies “Gypsy Camp Goes to Heaven“, “My Sweet, Lovable Beast“ etc. On their concerts all over ex YU and Europe the media often presented them as an authentic Gypsy band from Moscow, not knowing that they actually come from Belgrade, because they brought the performance of this music to perfection. In the period from 1983 to 1990 they published three albums (two of which were golden). The third album consists of music from the films they participated in, both as musicians and actors: Dark Side of the Sun (the first leading role of Brad Pitt), The Second Man, The Eighth Day in the Week (Daša Bosnić from the group Odjila in leading role) etc. We also mention the theatre play: We Fly We Shall Meet, directed by Stevo Žigon, in which they both acted and sang. In that period they were also awarded with: Orpheus for the best record, selected by JRT, as well as the European prize for the best song (Solniško) at the competition for the best radio recording in Europe. It is also interesting to note that the group Odjila was the first entertainment group that had a concert in “Kolarac“, the temple of classical music, as well as that they were the first music group that gave a concert in the Maribor Theatre since its foundation in the late 19th century. They had concerts and performed in all important halls in ex represented Yugoslavia at the World Festival of Gypsy Music in 1988, in London, where they won even more recognitions than Gypsy Kings.
