Live outside the Capitol Building as Trumps impeachment trial is set to begin

Ruptly is live outside the Capitol Building in Washington DC on Tuesday February 9, as the impeachment trial of former US President Donald Trump begins on the Senate Floor. On the first day of the trial, eight Democratic House impeachment managers are expected to start presenting their case with oral arguments, followed by Trump’s lawyers, which will also be requested to outline the former president’s defence. It is uncertain how long this first part of the trial will last, but it is expected to conclude by February 11. On January 26, the House Democratic impeachment managers formally delivered to the Senate the single article of impeachment with charges on “incitement of insurrection.“ Traditionally, the trial would commence on the following day, but Senate leaders agreed on postponing the date to give Trump’s legal team more time to prepare and Senate Democrats a chance to confirm President Joe Biden’s Cabinet nominations.
