This is the only Russian screen adaptation of the Tolstoy’s novel “Death of Ivan Ilyich“. In the film, we can hear the living voice of Leo Tolstoy. In the beginning, Tolstoy read his short story “the Wolf“. Only the last phrase doesn’t sound in the movie (probably it didn’t correspond to the director's plan). That's the phrase: “And since then, the boy stopped eating meat - no beef, no veal, no lamb, no chicken”. At the end of the film, there is an excerpt from Tolstoy's famous article “I Can not Be Silent“, exposing the death penalty. This movie is a diploma work of the actor and director Alexander Kaidanovsky on the Higher Director's courses. P.S. This is my first experience of translating a film from Russian into English (usually I do the opposite). Perhaps there are mistakes. I made these subtitles for my Indian friend Praveen P., because in due time this story made a great impression on him and he wanted to see the film.
