The Torban is a 25-60 stringed instrument that has both fretter strings-used for melodies and harmonies and unfretted bass strings as extensions on the body, and is played in Ukrainian traditional folk music, songs of rituals, western classical and other genres of music. A highly widespread instrument during the 17th and 18th century in parts of Europe, it is believed that the Torban was completely forgotten during the 19th and 20th century, and has survived only in museums.
