Welcome to the third class in this 14-week series. Today we will get into questions that continue to be vigorously debated — the effects of globalization and technological change on widening inequality. The questions we’ll be exploring today are: Can the effects of globalization be separated from those of technological change? How have they interacted to widen inequality? Given these effects, what are the major categories of jobs now and in the future? Why have low-wage “personal-service” jobs replaced higher-paying “routine production” jobs? Why do college graduates take “symbolic analytic” jobs? Why are all jobs becoming less stable? What are the consequences of these trends for politics? If you wish, I’ve shared some select readings from the syllabus for you. They’re available at: Class Outline ------------------------- 00:00 - Recap of the course so far 07:38 - Introduction to Week 3 08:55 -
