Visit Visit our website “Portrait of Two Winners,” a short film presented by Chevrolet about the 1963 All-American Soap Box Derby and the dreams of two young boys to win it. Started in 1933, the Derby is an annual youth soapbox car racing program. The World Championship finals are held each July at Derby Downs in Akron, OH. Cars competing in this competition and related events are built by their participants and are unpowered, relying completely on gravity to move. (0:48) Dalton Lee Deardor rides his bike around Minot, North Dakota and encounters a crowd of other kids outside a Chevrolet dealership looking at a soapbox derby car (2:02) Signup info for the 1963 Derby is displayed and Dalton takes a flier (2:44) A junior high school in Duluth, MN. Harold “Bo” Willis Conrad, the second character, walks home (4:29) The basement where Bo’s father used to work, and Bo sorts through the materials he’s using to build a soapbox derby so he can enter the race and win the scholarship (6:03) In Minot, Dalton purchases a soapbox derby kit. He reads the instructions and studies the specs of winning cars (7:02) Dalton and Bo saw wood and hammer as both boys continue their build (7:55) Dalton and Bo make their body shells with plywood. Bo uses nails instead of screws and keeps track of the derby’s weight with a scale (9:09) Dalton polishes his derby’s exterior with sandpaper and both boys begin painting (9:43) Local derbies take place to determine who will attend the 1963 All-American Soapbox Derby in Ohio. Participants sent to the finals take part in activities around Ohio, from swimming, and baseball to horseback riding over the four days (12:13) Pre-race days at the Derby, with new wheels being broken in, last-minute touches, and derby weighs (12:50) A boy walks in front of displays of previous winners. Bo looks at the other derby cars he’ll compete with (13:45) All the participants do trial runs on the race track (14:09) The participants gather around a campfire the night before the race and are all handed watches as a souvenir (14:47) The day of the big race, with shots of the crowd and the marching band. Three contestants compete at a time, with the track at 975 feet and less than 30 seconds available to complete (17:25) Dalton makes his way down the track but loses and joins the other participants. The races continue (18:51) The semi-finals take place and Bo wins (19:55) The three finalists are taken up the hill again for another race and Bo wins the 1963 Derby (21:00) The trophy is presented to Bo by the VP of General Motors and the GM of Chevrolet (21:38) All participants march into the banquet of champions as the audience cheers on (22:40) Bo stands on the stage and a GM representative congratulates him and gives him the scholarship (24:02) Bo returns to Duluth, where he is greeted by a homecoming parade (24:45) Dalton also returns home and is greeted by a surprise party at his house.
