This musical gem was composed by Gabriel Faure on Bastille Day ( July 14th) in 1898. He was 53 years old at the time. He believed in the beauty of simple phrases and melodies. This piece was not really known to flutists until 1970. It is one of my ultimate favorite pieces to play as a duo. It really is a musical valentine! The compositions of Faure are filled with lush melodies and harmonies, and we enjoy many of his works, including the incomparable Violin Sonata in A. The “Morceau de concours“ is small glimpse of that beauty in miniature.
