cherryteam has been finishing a bunch of projects recently, and “Shinigami“ is one of them. This has been in the works for several years with a lot of hype for its completion. I can definitely understand why. For one, high quality levels and even megacollabs often don’t come close to the length of this; the scale of the level is massive, being 4 minutes long with a huge team of creators. This is hype on its own, but of course it wouldn’t matter much if the level didn’t look very good too. Admittedly, red and even red mixed with yellow, like here, has been done quite a lot in the past. Still, I think it’s executed well enough here to stand out. What makes it stand out most visually, though, is the theme. Typically, levels using red lean towards some form of hell theme, but the theme here is focused around death in Japanese culture. This is seen in both the level name, “Shinigami“, meaning god of death, as well as various art found throughout the level. I haven’t seen a theme quite like it in Geometry Dash, except for “LEYAK“ which probably comes the closest, but that was themed around another culture than Japanese.
