In 1919, Architect Walter Gropius was appointed to head a new institution in Germany that would help rebuild the country . Called the Bauhaus (a German expression meaning house for building), the Institution called for a new “rational“ social housing for the workers. Bauhaus architects rejected details such as cornices, eaves, and decorative details. They used principles of Classical architecture in their purist form, functional and without ornamentation of any kind.
