Rawtekk History Collection Open Borders LP 2001 (Released on Friday, February 9, 2024) From the get-go, Rawtekk saw no borders, setting out to ever-evolve the musical landscape alongside their skills and artistic maturity. ['Open Borders'] is where this epic journey began – embarking with a courageous stride towards creative liberation. The technical challenges were almost unimaginable by today's standards, but posed an irresistible opportunity for Rawtekk, who dared to be true to themselves and craft their own distinctive style. Forging an independent identity in Electronic Music, Experimental Drum & Bass, Breakbeat, Tekk Step, and Downtempo was no easy feat, but the gauntlet had been thrown down. Although based in Germany, Rawtekk drew their musical inspiration from the likes of Aphex Twin, The Chemical Brothers, and The Prodigy, all hailing from the rebellious post-Acid House scene forged in the UK. While German club DJs adhered strictly to a defined criteria, even deeming it a faux pas to begin a track with a pad or soundscape without an intro featuring drums, Rawtekk embraced an audacious musical vision that dared to defy the established conventions of song structures. The artist’s unconventional approach, as debuted in ['Open Borders LP'], instantly began to shine during this period – ultimately reaching the attention of esteemed British magazine Future Music, who recognized the excellence of their work and pioneering approach early on – although ironically, this groundbreaking debut remained unreleased, until now. ['Open Borders'] represents an early expedition – an expression of pain, repressed anger, and an unquenchable thirst for freedom. It resonates as an internal call for boundless creativity. The version of ['Open Borders'] featured on this album is the original. The subsequent 2007 release of the ['Open Borders VIP'] version on the ['Juiceblender LP'] was tailored for the club scene, intended to captivate dance floors. Once again, the constraints of technology, and the will to surpass them take center stage. By today's standards, it may elicit a wry smile – they relied on an external device, the Korg Prophecy, a monophonic solo synthesizer with limited capabilities, which was meticulously programmed to extract every sonic nuance they could imagine. Playing chords or producing multiple sounds simultaneously remained an unattainable dream. In an era when audio recordings were primarily the purview of large, professional studios, every note played was captured using the hardware sampler AKAI S3000. Today, this evokes a sense of genuine retro charm. The ['Open Borders LP'] from 2001 marks the potent genesis of an extraordinary artistic duo. It invites us to uncover the embryonic stages of Rawtekk's musical odyssey.
