Investigative news outlet The Grayzone has been investigating the bottom of the sea, near the Nord Stream sabotage site, and have quite literally uncovered new evidence: a diver’s boot. Or perhaps that should be old evidence, as apparently investigators were already aware of the boot, which seems to drift in and out of the sediment on the floor of the Baltic Sea. The boot was (re)discovered during an independent expedition to the sea floor approximately five meters from the leak site, and appears to be a Thor overboot. Although no longer manufactured, the Thor is still in widespread use by divers in the US Navy, and many commercial industries, and fits over a drysuit. The boot offers almost no answers, but poses a lot of questions, the chief among them being why the Swedish investigators seem indifferent to this piece of evidence. Journalist Seymour Hersh suggested a theory that a diver may have returned to remove an incriminating, unexploded charge, which may be the source of the boot. Others have suggested it may have been a repair operator’s boot, and while operator Nord Stream 2 AG have confirmed the presence of the boot (which they discovered in February), they told The Grayzone that no dives for maintenance had ever taken place in the area.
