(Primal Scream). In the cold faraway reaches of Siberia, during the waning days of the Soviet Union, inside a nondescript school house buried in the snow, a group of school mates take their rudimentary instruments and play as loud as they can. Without Internet, music venues, media support, sponsors, or even decent instruments, these friends have little chance of making any impact outside the frigid city of Novosibirsk. Nevertheless, the ugliness and banality of Russian popular culture in the late 80's and early 90's compelled the members of a strange band called Hot Zex to create alternative rock music inspired by the shoegaze sound of contemporary Britain. Filled with unexpected turns and encounters with interesting people in the music business, as well as many hopes and disappointments, this film is told by the people who made challenging music within a sea of imitators. It is about truly independent musicians and their all-conquering faith in creative freedom.
