New York has long been a hub for underground music since at least the 1960s. This was very much the case in the 80s when Metal and Hardcore Punk was the talk of the town, with many of the city's young who came of age in the 70s. Many who had TVs in the 70s got to see the News coverage of Punk coming from the UK as well as the rise of bands like Alice Cooper, Judas Priest, and Iron Maiden. It was only a matter of time before American youth realized they could try their hand at music and form their own bands. These kids would become older teens or young adults by the time Metal began to evolve and Thrash Metal came about. This where the seeds of Death Metal would begin to take root. Prior to the genre's establishment, Thrash was the most aggressive thing going, and this would be fine for some, but other people yearned for something darker.
