These days if you hear the name Moisei Halfin (1907-1990), it tends to be connected to his most well-known pupil, Grigory Sokolov. Indeed Sokolov may be one of the very few pianists who has reached such a high level from the guidance of two teachers who were married. Moisei Halfin and Liya Zelikhman–both students of Samari Savshinsky–brought up a generation of pianists in the Leningrad Conservatory. Fortunately a few of Halfin's recordings have survived, including this one from the 1950s. He plays 4 of Goltz's 24 Preludes (no. 4, 6, 19 & 23). Goltz himself studied at the Leningrad Conservatory under Leonid Nikolayev, though unlike Halfin and Zelikhman, he did not make it out of the Blockade. Моисей Хальфин - Борис Гольц - Moisey Khalfin
