Check out my website for lots more Indian street food! | Have Facebook? One of the most famous attractions in Darjeeling, India, is the Himalayan Railroad, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The railroad, which runs through the mountains is high in elevation and was constructed using a very narrow gauge track. Since the train cars are so small and the track is so narrow, the train is better known just as the Toy Train. While I was in Darjeeling, I decided to head down to the railroad station one day and buy tickets for something known as the Joy Ride, a round-trip tourist ride on the Darjeeling Himalayan Railroad. They use a English made locomotive and still burn coal to run the steam powered train - so part of the experience was just being able to ride in a steam powered locomotive. We snaked our way across the road and through the mountains while our train huffed and puffed its way up the hill. After about 30 minutes or so we arrived at War Memorial in Darjeeling where we got out of the train and walked around for a few moments. The conductors added coal to the furnace and we were on our way again to reach the station of Ghum, which is the highest elevation railroad station in all of India. Once we reached Ghum, we walked around for a little while, I drank a quick cup of chai and then we were back again en-route back to where we started. While it wasn't the most exciting thing I've ever done, it was pretty cool to ride a steam powered locomotive through the mountains on the Darjeeling Himalayan Railroad! Thank you for watching!
