In a remarkable show of solidarity with the mainland, a small group of demonstrators gathered outside the American consulate in Taipei on Monday. About 60 demonstrators in Taiwan put political animosity aside on Monday, joining hands in solidarity with mainland China against NATO's bombing of the Chinese embassy in Yugoslavia. SOUNDBITE: (Mandarin) “We are all Chinese. The mainland Chinese are Chinese just as we are also Chinese. This is justice for the Chinese. Why should the Americans be allowed to bully like this?“ SUPER CAPTION: Demonstrator, vox pop At least three Chinese diplomats were reportedly killed in the bombing which NATO now admits was a deliberate attack made in error. It has proved to be the most politically dangerous mistake in a series of NATO blunders during the seven-week air war over Yugoslavia that have led to the loss of civilian lives. SOUNDBITE: (English) “When NATO bombed the bus, they say it's a mistake. When they bombed the train, they say it's a mistake. They bombed civilians' houses, they say it's a mistake too. They bombed the mosque, they say it's a mistake. Now they've bombed the Chinese Embassy, they say it's also a mistake. I think nobody believes anymore that these are mistakes.“ SUPER CAPTION: Demonstrator, vox pop China suspended high-level military contacts with the United States as well as talks on human rights and other issues on Monday. The decision marks one of the biggest crises in U-S-China relations since ties were established in 1979.
