Mame means “bean“ or mini-bonsai in Japanese. In this video, Eric shares his techniques to be successful growing mame bonsai. He uses a tray lined with sifted fine lava to nestle the mini-bonsai containers into. This tray has Zelkova, Cotoneaster, Portulacaria (aka Elephant Bush), exposed-root Maple, and Juniper bonsai. The thick moss covering has thrived due to daily secondary and tertiary waterings of the tray, to ensure these teeny tiny bonsai don't dry out on warm days. Each mame is potted in it's own container filled with akadama soil, pumice, and lava. Other than those extra waterings, all that's required to maintain the health of the trees is regular root trim and clean-up. 00:04:27 for a close-up of Eric trimming the roots of three very well-rooted trees. 00:07:14 Eric sets up a new tray and demonstrates a game-changing way to grow healthy and happy mame!
