On Friday, dozens of railway workers tried to storm the headquarters of freight operator Fret SNCF in Paris. The attempt was followed by scuffles, as the protesters were pushed back by riot police. The company’s managing director, Jerme Leborgne, was seen leaving the site amid loud boos from the crowd. According to local media, tensions between Fret SNCF and SUD-Rail trade union reached a boiling point after the company announced it would be ceding 20% of its business to competitors and downsizing to avoid reimbursing €5.3 billion considered as illegal state aid by the European Commission.
