Anna Mary Robertson Moses [Sept 7, 1860 - Dec 13, 1961] is renowned in America for being its foremost portrayer of Folk Art. She was born in 1860 - on a farm in Greenwich, New York, and was one of ten children. She had a happy childhood, but was somewhat impoverished. Anna grew up loving arts, crafts, and also became proficient in tapestry as well as quilting. At the age of 27, she married one of the hired hands and had a family of 10 herself. However, 5 of the children died young. When Grandma Moses developed arthritis, a friend suggested that she try painting instead of stitching.
