A teacher and a student demonstrate the process of preparing the plates, adjusting the pressure of the tanks of oxygen and acetylene used in the blowpipe cutting tool, meeting safety standards, and how to properly cut different shapes in the metal. The film is produced by Linde Air Products Company, as a Division of Union Carbide and Carbon Corporation (UCC). “Flame-cutting” title banner (00:14). A worker is cutting plates of iron and steel using oxy-acetylene flame cutting (00:34). He cleans a steel plate with a wire brush (01:28). His student measures and marks the line of cut with a piece of soapstone (01:33), before using a prick punch-tool and a hammer to make indents along the line (01:40). The teacher demonstrates the technique of holding the blowpipe for a straight cut (01:46), and the student makes his attempt (02:33). He opens the tanks of oxygen and acetylene while adjusting the pressure (02:49). The teacher instructs his student to roll his sleeves down, button his collar, and to wear gloves and safety goggles (03:05). The blowpipe is lit and adjusted (03:24). An animation illustrates the process of cutting the steel plate (03:43). The student cuts the plate (04:06). An animation illustrates the mistake of moving the blowpipe too fast, followed by the solution (05:02). A demonstration of how to make a smooth cut by correctly distancing the blowpipe from the plate (05:40). The student practices cutting a longer stretch of metal (06:16). A demonstration of how to cut non-straight lines and shapes (06:32). The student attempts beveling (07:09), circular cut (08:22), and a cut away from the edges of the plate (08:35). An animation illustrates the process (08:43). The process from start to finish I reviewed, starting with cleaning the plate with a wire brush (09:41), the marking of the line with soapstone and a punch-tool (09:46), followed by the selection of the nozzle for the blowpipe (09:52) and setting the pressure for the tanks of oxygen and acetylene (09:59), and finally meeting safety standards (10:05) before beginning the process of cutting the metal plates (10:11). “The End” (11:30).
