A male-born runner was heavily booed and jeered after winning the girls’ 200m state title in Oregon. Aayden Gallagher was filmed crossing the finish line ahead of the female athletes, and was met with loud boos and jeers from the crowd. Boos could also be heard as Gallagher stood on the podium alongside five girls. Gallagher’s participation in female events has been heavily criticized, with lawmakers calling for a change to the rules after the athlete won a previous 400m race. Currently, Oregon allows athletes to participate in the category which ‘aligns with their gender identity’ without the need to provide evidence of a medical transition. Footage of the race was also shared by women’s rights campaigner Riley Gaines, who argued that the girl who finished second in the 200-meter race was the rightful winner of the state championship.
