When the sparrowhawk is hunting for small birds it usually swoops in low over the fence into the garden and takes its prey by surprise but when its after small mammals it takes a completely different approach. If it knows that there are likely to be small mammals about it will take up a convenient perch and just wait for them to appear. On this particular day as I was filming a mouse in a tree my local male sparrowhawk came into the garden and landed on a branch just two mitres form my hide, luckily for the mouse that I was filming it seemed more interested in a mouse on the ground in front of the hide Attributions: Angelic Forest by Doug Maxwell.
