Map of the Walk: Liteiny Prospekt is one of the main avenues in St. Petersburg. It starts from Liteiny Bridge and ends at Nevsky Prospect. The length is 1.9 km. Not far from Liteiny Prospekt there are Mayakovskaya, Chernyshevskaya and Gostiny Dvor metro stations. In 1711, a foundry and cannon yard was erected on the left bank of the Neva River. In order to have a road to Nevsky Prospekt, a clearing was cut through, which then became a street. They called it Foundry, as it came from the foundry yard. Then, this street was named Liteiny Prospect. Workers and artisans settled on Liteiny Avenue. Houses used to be wooden. Nicholas I issued a decree banning the construction of wooden houses in the central area of the city. Gradually, wooden buildings on Liteiny began to be replaced by stone ones.
