Sign up for the newsletter: The M76 is a semi-auto sniper rifle developed by Zastava in Serbia (then Yugoslavia) that fired a potent cartridge (AKA 8mm Mauser). The M76 became an icon for snipers from the former Yugoslavian states, and was frequently tied to the bloody images from the Yugoslavian and Kosovo War with civilian snipers and military snipers dueling in the cityscape. As a non-Soviet state, Yugoslavia had no obligation to do what Moscow wanted. In return, when it wanted a semi-auto sniper weapon, Moscow did not give the Yugoslavians the Soviet SVD Dragunov. Zastava did what some other eastern countries did when they didn't have the blueprints to an SVD: they scaled up their Kalashnikov.
