This is because of its excellent technical performances; dielectric strength and arc quenching capabilities. In recent times, there is an ongoing active research into the possible replacement of SF6 which is characterized by a strong global warming potential. Experimentally different gases including compressed Air, HFO and other gas mixtures are being studied. This ought to be complemented by computational calculations on dielectric behaviour and electrical breakdown. This has been the focus of the current work studying pre-breakdown phenomena, specifically streamer discharges in possible alternatives to SF6. Studies have been done in Air, CO2 and SF6 for short gaps (5mm or less) using COMSOL Multiphysics and in Air and CO2 for longer gaps (> 10 mm) using AfivoStreamer. Quantitative comparison with experimental results on velocity, diameter and the general influence of increasing pressure have been studied.
