Female humpback whales carry their babies for 11 months. After this, the newborn “calves“ feed on their mother’s milk for another 5-7 months before they are weaned. Whales give birth tail first to prevent the newborn from drowning. As soon as the birth is completed, the female begins to gently push the baby closer to the surface so that it can take its first breaths.
