Kani Basami is one of the most infamous techniques in Judo. Due to high incidence of injuries, in the beginning of the 80s, this throw was prohibited in major international competitions. For some time it was still allowed in Japan, but eventually it was banned completely. The main catalyst for this ban was an incident at All Japan Judo Championships 1980, where Sumio Endo's Kani Basami broke Yasuhiro Yamashita's calf bone (first clip in this video). Unlike Judo, this technique, albeit rarely, is still used in other grappling arts, mainly SAMBO and freestyle wrestling, where it is an effective entry into a leg lock or counter to a single leg takedown.
