Now what does the “Mk“ in “Mk3“ stand for in the Golf? “Mk“ stood for the Generation Marque of the Volkswagen Golf, thus “Mk3“ standing for the 3rd generation for this particular generation of the Golf. The Volkswagen Golf featured a 2.0 Liter, Inline 4 Engine, paired with a 5-speed manual with overdrive transmission that produced 115 horsepower at 5,400 RPM. There were three trim levels offered for the 1997 Golf; The baseline GL trim in 2 or 4 door hatchback, the Wolfsburg trim in 4 door hatchback and the top line performance oriented GL TDI in 2 door hatchback format.
