It is now thought the final toll in Romania's earthquake disaster will be about 4,000 dead, 10,000 injured and 90,000 homeless. Central Bucharest resembles a huge construction site, with many of the dead still buried beneath the rubble of more than thirty multi-storey apartment blocks. Rescue work proceeds at an agonisingly slow pace as wreckage is shifted carefully piece by piece in case some survivors may still be alive in the ruins. There have already been some remarkable escapes. Throughout the country, industry has been badly hit. Oil wells, petro-chemical plants and engineering works have all been damaged and some experts claim the economy has been set back at least five years.
