Allende is calm and gives an inspiring speech knowing that he will soon be dead. Allende was shot as the palace was being stormed. The coup leaders claimed the military had killed Allende. In 2011 a Chilean government commission exhumed Allende’s body and claimed he had committed suicide. Allende was elected president in 1970 and was unpopular with Chile’s wealthy class because he initiated many programs to aid and provide jobs for poor people. President Nixon informed the CIA that Allende was to be unseated from Chile’s presidency. The U.S. spent many millions of dollars organizing a military coup against Allende.
