The first one - the Basilica of Saint Mary Major - is a Papal basilica. It was one of the first churches built in honour of the Virgin Mary in the fifth century. The second one - the Basilica of St. Mary of the Angels and the Martyrs - was constructed on the ruins of the ancient Roman baths of Diocletian in the 16th century, presumably following Michelangelo Buonarotti's design.
