A “living fossil” is a species that hasn’t changed much since prehistoric times. The frilled sharks have a very primitive appearance and almost look more like a snake or an eel than a shark. Their body is very long and their head is flat with a rounded snout. Their throat is ruffled with six pairs of gills, which resemble collars. These collar-looking gills are the reason the frilled shark was given his name.
