In a study published in Scientific Reports (), researchers at ELTE Department of Ethology, Hungary found that companion dogs, but not companion pigs, exhibited the specific behavior patterns of attachment towards their owner. These findings suggest that the domestication process and early intense exposure to humans alone might be not sufficient to trigger human-analogous attachment in companion animals. However, the unique selection for cooperation with and dependency on humans in dogs during their domestication might have been the key feature for the emergence of attachment to the owner.
