Many mineral specimens will produce a flash of light when they are subjected to friction, impact or breakage. The light produced is known as “triboluminescence“. In this video we demonstrate triboluminescence using two pieces of milky quartz. Most pieces of quartz (and many other minerals) will produce a flash of light using the same methods. In a dark room, hold a piece of quartz firmly in one hand. Then place the other piece of quartz firmly against it and drag it forcefully across the surface in a motion that is similar to striking a match. If you do this properly and have a piece of quartz that exhibits triboluminescence you will see a flash of light. Many other minerals and common materials are triboluminescent.
