The challenges facing African food systems are significant and broad reaching. The population in Africa is projected to double in the next 30 years to 2.4 billion and 13 of the world’s largest cities will be in Africa by 2100. Nutritious diets are unaffordable for 3 billion people, 30% if Sub-Saharan Africa’s population is severely food insecure and agricultural productivity is low with many African countries being highly dependent on imports. The effects of climate change and widespread land degradation are putting further pressure on the food system and low investments, commercialization, and industrialization limit economic opportunities. Food systems have a crucial role in enabling this growth; however, they must urgently pivot to serve the fast urbanization, growing middle class and the labour shift away from farming jobs.
