The coronation of King Charles III is set to take place on May 6 in an event featuring new twists on traditions dating back more than 1,000 years. Some changes from the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, which was the first to be televised live 70 years ago, will be made — although ‘the monarch plans to wear the same vestments as Elizabeth did,’ per the AP. Members of the royal family will be in attendance, including Charles’ sons Prince William and Prince Harry. Hundreds of heads of state from around the world are also on the guest list. First lady Jill Biden will attend the coronation in representation of the U.S. The coronation comes despite a growing anti-monarchist sentiment in the UK, with some protesters gathering in London the week before the event to chant, ‘Not my king.’ The price of the ceremony—likely to be in the millions of pounds—has also been criticized as a waste of taxpayers’ money amid a high cost of living.
