Arts Magazine visits Inka Essenhigh on the eve of her exhibition at Victoria Miro Venice (6 Nov - 11 Dec, 2021). She explains the role of narrative in her landscapes and the anthropomorphic adventures that take place within them. Essenhigh’s attitude toward painting is one of display, recognizing that art is made for an audience, not – as romanticized in times past – in absence of one. Art is visual theater. Inka Essenhigh (born 1969 in Bellefonte, Pennsylvania) is an American painter based in New York City. Throughout her career, Essenhigh has had solo exhibitions at galleries such as Deitch Projects, Mary Boone Gallery, 303 Gallery, Stefan Stux Gallery, Jacob Lewis Gallery in New York, Victoria Miro in London and Venice, Tomio Koyama Gallery in Tokyo, and Il Capricorno in Venice. Her work is in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art (New York), Whitney Museum of Art, Smithsonian American Art Museum, and Tate Modern (London). Paintings featured: Bleeding Heart, 2021 Blue Field, 202
