In 'Picnic at Hanging Rock', Peter Weir utilizes the evocative and chilling sound of the virtuous pan flute of Gheorghe Zamfir in unexpected and extremely effective ways, submerging us in his lyrical and sensorial exploration of the traditional female archetype. Weir, with the help of Zamfir, configures a gorgeous juxtaposition of image and sound, confronting the spaces of a conservative female boarding school in the 1900s with a gigantic Rocky Mountain in the wild Australian countryside, creating a parallel between the social, ideological and normative baggage which conform a genre role, opposed to the complexity of human sexuality which, as this tale does, refuses to offer easy answers and definitive explanations.
