It has become a symbol of Üsküdar and stands as the sole remaining artifact from the Byzantine era in the area. Its history dates back to around 24 BC. In 1110, Byzantine Emperor Alexios I constructed a wooden tower protected by stone walls. A chain of iron was stretched from this tower to another one erected in the Mangana district of Constantinople (a historic neighborhood on the peninsula). Later, the islet was connected to the Asian coast by an underwater defense wall, remnants of which can still be seen today.
