Shrewsbury Cakes From The 1856 'The Virginia Housewife' - Old Cookbook Show Today's recipe for Shrewsbury Cakes comes from an old cookbook 'The Virginia Housewife' - often touted as the first 'real' American cookbook. Not sure about that... there are several other earlier American cookbooks that could claim the same. SHREWSBURY CAKES. Mix a pound of sugar, with two pounds of flour, and a large spoonful of pounded coriander seeds; sift them, add three quarters of a pound of melted butter, six eggs, and a gill of brandy; knead it well, roll it thin, cut it in shapes, and bake without discolouring it.
