Council members have told a High Court judge that the government's plans for housing illegal migrants on land that was once a part of one of the most well-known RAF bases in England should be invalidated. West Lindsey District Council's solicitors contend that it is illegal to use property at the abandoned RAF Scampton airfield, which served as the Dambusters' base during World War II. A similar challenge is being made by Braintree District Council in Essex about proposals for property that was formerly a part of RAF Wethersfield in the county. Gabriel Clarke-Holland, a local, is opposing the proposals for Wethersfield as well. In addition to an enormous amount of time and work, “(the council) has to date invested over £370,000 in these once-in-a-generation redevelopment proposals,“ he stated. “Those investments and the opportunities presented by the proposed RAF Scampton redevelopment scheme would be forfeited in the event that illegal migrants are housed on the site.“
