The first-gen Nike Alphafly Next% made headlines as the marathon race shoes Eliud Kipchoge wore to break the sub-2-hour marathon barrier. But for many runners – myself included – the massive stack of ZoomX foam, slightly unnatural feel meant we still preferred to laced up the Nike Vaporfly Next% 2 for our marathon PB hunts. Now the Alphafly Next% 2 has launched with a higher drop, tweaked midsole, new uppers and heel construction and some new outsole grip. And Nike says it's designed for peaking runners to chase fast times over the marathon distance. But have these upgrades made it a better shoe? Is it the best marathon running shoe going?
