Every year dozens of shamans from all over Buryatia, Russia, gather on the island of Olkhon where they hold a mass blessing ceremony. The shamans enter a trance, summon the spirits of the sacred place and indwell them. Earlier, there was at least one shaman in every family, but during the USSR many were repressed. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, shamanism began to revive and is now very popular. People of different faiths go to the ministers of this cult to seek advice and protection from evil forces, but more often it is for healing.
