After experiencing almost every derby we can possible experience in the Czech Republic, we decided it was time to travel to the sister country of Slovakia and finally ground hop a game there. To be more specific, it was my birthday weekend, and the thought of attending the biggest game in Slovakia; The Traditional Derby - Was all too exciting. The derbies contested by Slovan Bratislava and Spartak Trnava and is named The Traditional Derby as both clubs are in fact not inter cities rivals, but are separated apart by some 47km. Additionally, their rivalry dates back to the late 1960s to mid 1970s, where they both dominated the then Czechoslovakian football league. Furthermore, they almost conquered Europe, Slovan Bratislava beat Barcelona 3-2 in the 1969 European cup winners cup while Spartak Trnava lost out to Johan Cruyff's Ajax in the European Cup semi final of the same year. Despite such success, since the Velvet Divorce in 1993 and the establishment of the newly independent Slovak football league, Spartak Trnava have only been able to lay claim to one title triumph where as Slovan Bratislava have dominated. They are currently on course to win their 14th league title. Nevertheless, the gap in honours is still not enough to lessen the traditional of two Slovakian giants. Now you know the background of the fixture, it's time to tune in and experiencing it up close.
