Said by many to be be the best Medtner's Piano Concerto, here is one of the most titanesque, gigantic, and tragic concerto of the whole repertoire. Medtner wrote it during the World War 1 and spent three years composing it (one year for piano part and two for orchestra, as he hated writing for orchestra). Immediatly starting with dramatic octaves and arpeggios, mixed with an incredible harmony, this masterpiece quickly shows what it is gonna be all about. The orchestra then make its absolutely grandiose entrance. The performance by Tozer is definitely my favorite. As always very well balanced between piano and orchestra, very intense, dramatic, and detailed. It is in three parts : I. Allegro - 00:00 II. Tranquillo, dolce (Variations) - 8:49 III. Coda. Allegro molto - 26:54 Geoffrey Tozer, London Philharmonic Orchestra, Neeme Järvi
