On 24 March 2024, a severe geomagnetic storm occurred following the eruption of a coronal mass ejection from the Sun early on 23 March 2024. The three Swarm satellites ‘feel’ Earth’s magnetic field changing as space weather interacts with the magnetosphere. Here, Swarm Bravo measured Earth’s magnetic field as it warps in response to space weather. This is represented by deep reds near the poles, which indicate the magnetic field is stronger than the baseline. At the equator, meanwhile, deeper blues show how the magnetic field becomes weaker, indicative of the overall warping of the magnetic field that occurs when a strong coronal mass ejection hits home.
