Police and protesters clashed in the streets of Paris on Monday after unions called workers to turn out in force for marches on France's Labour Day after French President Emmanuel Macron signed a contested pension reform law. French unions pushed the president to scrap a higher retirement age during the May Day protests. Violent protests across the French capital saw demonstrators pelt police with Molotov cocktails and fireworks, set alight ride-sharing bicycles and vandalize a docking station for Vélib bikes. One officer was badly injured when he was struck by a fiery projectile, Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin said. Last month, Macron raised the retirement age by two years to 64, despite multi-sector strikes, in a move that drove his popularity down to near the record lows seen during the “Yellow Vest“ crisis of 2018-2019. While May Day is marked around the world on May 1 as a celebration of labour rights, Monday’s rallies tapped into broader frustrations at the state of today’s world.
