Kris Drever performs ‘Pilot Whales’ to Emma Neave-Webb, the woman who inspired it. Kris wrote the song as part of 21st Century Folk, Radio 2’s series that sees five people have songs written about their lives. Marine conservationist Emma lives on the Scottish island of Sanday in Orkney, where she works to rescue beached whales affected by changing seas. She has been involved with multiple whale rescues, but also some mass strandings where nothing could be done to help the animals. Award-winning Orcadian songwriter Kris Drever has family ties to Sanday. To hear Emma’s full story, find 21st Century Folk on BBC Sounds: Recorded near Tresness Beach on Sanday. Produced by 7digital for the BBC.
