Joachim Raff (1822-1882) had already met Liszt in Basel in the beginning of June 1845 and was immediately made his secretary for two months. In 1850, he became Liszt’s assistant. Together with August Conradi, Raff orchestrated Liszt’s orchestral works under the instructions and supervision of the master. As a composer of music for the piano he had already successfully made a name for himself by 1844. Works such as Pieces characteristiques, op. 2, or Morceau de Salon, op. 12, were published upon the recommendation of Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy. Introduction et Allegro scherzo, op. 87, published by Reiter-Biedermann in 1862, has recognizable characteristics of both Chopin and Liszt in the opening but then reminds the listener strongly on the liveliness of his earlier role model, evident in the midsummer night’s dreamlike allegro quasi presto scherzoso.
