Haydn's Symphony No. 100 in G major, commonly known as the “Military“ Symphony, is one of his most famous works and part of his twelve London Symphonies (Nos. 93-104). Composed in 1793-94, it premiered in London on March 31, 1794, to great acclaim. The nickname “Military“ comes from the distinctive use of percussion instruments that were unconventional in symphonic music at the time, such as bass drum, cymbals, and triangle. These instruments create a martial atmosphere, especially in the second movement, which evokes the sound of military fanfares and marching troops.
